Coming Soon to Mill Creek! - Farmers Market
Recently I had the opportunity to attend a community presentation on a project that has been in the works for a couple of years now to bring an indoor farmers market to Snohomish County. This project is moving forward and it is so exciting!
Our Snohomish County Food and Farming Center will be located at McCollum Park. The front of the Farmers Market Building will be where the swimming pool is now, facing North. Other buildings will be behind the Farmers Market. The other buildings will include Commercial Kitchen space, a Processing Space and a Warehouse.
This Food and Farming Center will benefit our community in so many ways. Those of us who shop local, will benefit from having access to local produce year-round. With Snohomish County farmers having priority, this center will serve the wider region including Skagit, Whatcom and King Counties as well, providing farmers with access to equipment and infrastructure for processing (washing, freezing, cutting, etc., a warehouse for storing product, distribution, direct and wholesale sales of locally produced agricultural products.
Our food security is linked to the farms in our own backyards, yet the ability for local farmers to process and sell it to local consumers has been limited. With farmers being able to collaborate with each other, more local food will be able to get into schools, hospitals and grocery stores.
I am sure that you join me in welcoming our future Food and Farming Center to Mill Creek and Snohomish County.
